Local level decides to build Lepcha museum in Ilam

Mangalbare– A museum is to be set up at the Rong rural municipality in Ilam to protect the culture of the indigenous Lepcha people facing the risk of extinction.

The local government has decided to build the museum and start a home-stay facility here within the next five years, said rural municipality chair Shamsher Rai.

The 20-year strategic plan formulated by the rural municipality includes the plans for museum and home stay at this Lepcha majority local level.

Kolbung, Irautar, Jirmale and Shantipur are major habitats for the Lepcha people whose population, according to the 2011 national census, is around below 4000. The 20-year plan includes the home stay to promote local tourism and the Lepcha culture. Guests will be offered the Lepcha cuisine during the home stay.
