School building waiting for reconstruction

Gorkha–A school building is still awaiting reconstruction three and half years after the Gorkha Earthquake badly damaged it.

The building of Ratna Laxmi Secondary School at Dumridanda of Gorkha municipality-6 suffered damage in the earthquake on April 25, 2015 with its epicenter in Barpak of Gorkha district.

Classes are run in the same building in a risky condition. It was stated that the Government of India would assist in its reconstruction. Engineers have put a red sticker on the building meaning that it is highly risky to use.

Head teacher at the school Sadhana Tripathi said that they are running the early childhood daycare, nursery and Grade 8, 9 and 10 classes in this building in lack of rooms. “We are running classes in the building that has developed cracks and gaps on wall joints. We are compelled to take risk as we do not have enough class rooms,” she lamented.

Although the school had been running classes under a tent made available by the Indian Embassy, the tent is now torn, so leaving the school with no other option than to run classes in the quake-damaged building.

Head teacher Tripathi said that running classes in the open was the only option to using the damaged building.
The school is running classes in temporary shed constructed out of corrugated tin. It is very cold during winter and very hot during summer inside this shed, the students have complained.
