9 killed in Indian steel plant explosion

NEW DELHI –At least nine people have been killed and 14 others injured in a blast at a steel plant in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh on Tuesday, officials said.

The blast occurred in a gas pipeline at the state-owned Steel Authority of India's Bhilai Steel Plant in Bhilai town, some 30 km from state capital Raipur.

"At least nine people were burnt to death while 14 others received injuries and most of them were said to be in a serious condition," Inspector General of Police G.P. Singh told the media.

Local TV channels reported that police and rescue teams are still looking for survivors at the blast site.
A probe has been ordered into the blast, another official said. "It seemed to be an accidental blast, not any sabotage, prima facie. Anyway, we will wait for the probe report," he added.

This is not the first time that explosion has hit the Bhilai Steel Plant. Six workers lost their lives in an explosion in the plant four years ago. Enditem
