Green campaign kicks off in the hottest city of the country

Nepalgunj –The local Municipality in Nepalgunj has initiated a Green Campaign to maintain balance in the rising temperature and environmental degradation due to the repercussions of the wanton urbanization.

Nepalgunj is of the hottest city repute in the country where the highest temperature generally shoots up above 40 degrees Celsius in summer.

According to the Mayor of Nepalgunj Municipality, Dr Dhawal Shumsher Rana, saplings of various trees soaking pollutants in its leaves would be planted along the roadside in every street in the Municipality in coordination with the local organizations.

Nepalgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Green Club Nepal, B Group among others have been coordinating efforts with the Municipality for the campaign.

The campaign aims to transform Nepalgunj into a Green City within four years, said Mayor Rana, adding that alternatives would be sought for planting saplings in the narrow roads in the Municipality.

Saplings were planted alongside the road stretching from Ranjha to Jamunaha in the Nepalgunj-Surkhet road section in the first phase.

Wanton urbanization, rapid population growth, growing populations and the like have been contributing to the rise in the temperature in the City.

Furthermore, every house being built in the Municipality has to plant a sapling compulsorily, the Green Campaign of Municipality dictates.

Mayor Rana said that the Municipality was conducting research whether this rule has been enforced strictly and those not abiding by this 'One House One Tree' rule will be deprived of all the facilities to be rendered by the municipality.
