Locals blame authorities for unchecked excavation of riverbank materials

Nawalparasi –The illegal excavations at the Jharahi river located within the Ramgram municipality in western Nawalparasi has increased with locals blaming the apathy on part of the local authorities.

The theft and supply of river sand, gravel, stone and pebbles have been taking place at the hands of local smugglers who excavate the materials in the evening and morning hours under the pretext of using it in the villages.

Locals allege that the smugglers have been selling the materials extracted from river banks in Sahuwa Tikar area of Ramgram municipality – 1 and Suryapura at ward no 4.

Around 100 tractor–loads of materials worth thousands of rupees are excavated from the river on a daily basis despite which the local authorities have remained silent. Locals blame the municipality and the District Coordination Committee (DCC) of not carrying out routine inspections and allowing extensive theft.
