New sub-variant of Omicron confirmed in Kathmandu

110 new cases of COVID-19 recorded on Wednesday

KATHMANDU, July 6: BA.5 subvariant of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has been confirmed in Kathmandu for the first time.

“In a lab test conducted at the National Public Health Laboratory, a person has tested positive for a BA.5 subvariant of the Omicron variant of COVID-19,” a source at the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) told Ratopati.

Earlier, the variant was reported confirmed at Dhulikhel Hospital as well. 

Similarly, the country has recorded as many as 110 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, according to the MoHP. The number was 90 on Tuesday. Nepal has been witnessing a surge in new cases of COVID-19 recently.
