Election to HoR Speaker in a while

Kathmandu–The election to the Speaker of the House of Representatives is being held shortly. As only one candidate- Agni Prasad Sapkota from the ruling Nepal Communist Party- is proposed for the post, he would be declared the Speaker unopposed after getting proposed and backed in the House of Representatives meeting today.

Deputy parliamentary party leader of the ruling party, Subash Nembang, has proposed leader Sapkota and Chief Whip of NCP, Dev Prasad Gurung, lawmaker Onsari Gharti and Laxman Lal Karna of Rastriya Janata Dal seconded for Sapkota's candidacy.

The HoR meeting held on January 20 had slated the date for the election of Speaker for today. As the senior most member of the HoR, Mahantha Thakur had informed the January 20 meeting that Deputy Speaker Dr Shibamaya Tumbahangphe resigned from the post.

Then Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara had resigned from the post on 2 October last year, following the rape allegation by a woman working the parliament secretariat. He is currently in custody.

After the election of the Speaker, the process for the election to the post of Deputy Speaker begins.
