Xi sends condolences to Iraqi president over stampede

BEIJING– Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday sent a message of condolence to his Iraqi counterpart, Barham Salih, over a stampede in the Middle East country. In his message, Xi said he was shocked to learn about the stampede in the Iraqi city of Karbala, which caused heavy casualties.

On behalf of the Chinese government and people, and also in his own name, Xi expressed profound condolences over the loss of lives, conveyed heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families and the injured, and wished the injured a quick recovery.

Also on Thursday, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang sent a message to Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi to offer his sympathies to the bereaved families and the injured.
